The Benefits of Running

A few weeks ago, we gave you some tips on learning to run. It was not by chance, the benefits of this sport are many. In particular, it is one of the simplest and most effective activities to stay in good shape, and all for a very low cost. If you are not convinced, we have prepared a list with all the advantages of running.

It is very easy

The first of the benefits of running is that you don’t have to be especially skilled or know complicated rules to get going. Practically anyone can do it, unless they have a contraindicated disease. Anyway, and as we usually comment in the blog, before you start exercising, in case of doubt it is always advisable to ask your doctor what you can and cannot do.

It doesn’t require almost anything

You don’t need to go to sports facilities or buy expensive equipment. With a good pair of sneakers and normal sportswear you can go running almost anywhere. You only have to worry a little about your safety and avoid the traffic areas.

Burns a lot of calories

Running is one of the most recommended activities to lose weight, precisely because it is one of the sports that consumes more calories. And you don’t have to go at a fast pace to see the effects. With running at a moderate pace (even walking fast at first), you are already burning fat. As long as you are consistent and regular in your physical activity, you will see quick results.

Reduces stress

Running, like other types of physical activity, produces a relaxing effect soon after the effort begins. Soon the tensions you may have because of work or personal concerns are gone.

In addition, if you have chosen to go running outside, you benefit from a double effect of changing the scene and changing the activity, which is very conducive to thinking more creatively and reflectively about the issues that matter to you.

Improve your physical condition

One of the greatest benefits of running is usually also the main reason to start practicing this sport: to get in better physical condition. Regular physical activity tones the body, and after a few days you feel a clear improvement in your sense of well-being with your body. One feels lighter, more agile, less tired, and many tasks of daily life seem much easier.

Reduces health problems

We had already talked about the health benefits of physical activity, and of course running has the same advantages. In particular, it reduces the risk of obesity (and all diseases associated with overweight), as well as decreases the likelihood of problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or stroke. Not to mention that exercise strengthens bones by providing them with calcium.

I like to compare sport with maintenance done with mechanical elements. If we do not exercise enough, our organs are not sufficiently maintained, and therefore the risk of failure increases.

It even reduces the chance of having knee problems

Running is often associated with knee problems. Well, actually running tends to decrease the risk of joint incidents. Together with the aging, the main cause of the deterioration of the articulations is the overweight. Since people who run regularly tend to lose weight, they protect their joints in the long run.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be careful. Running can mean hurting your knees if it’s not done properly. In particular, people who are already slightly overweight should start with brisk walking to lose weight for a while. If they were to start running directly, the exercise combined with the excess weight could have traumatic effects on their knees.

It makes you feel better

The psychological benefits of running are numerous. You feel good at the end of a training session, thanks to the endorphins released. You feel good psychologically after a while because you have improved your physical condition. You also get a lot of satisfaction when you manage to overcome the difficulties and effort, and achieve the desired results. All this helps to increase your self-esteem and makes you feel better day by day.

You will live more and better

If you combine points 5 (improves physical condition) and 6 (reduces the risk of disease), you get an increase in life expectancy as well as quality of life. And that’s good, because living longer makes more sense if you’re healthy.

We have to emphasize that we are talking in statistical terms. There will be people who don’t take care of themselves at all and live for many years, and others who practice sports and die young from the disease. However, one of the benefits of running is that it significantly improves your chances.

You will sleep better

If having an occasional intense physical activity is incompatible with a good night’s sleep, the regular practice of sport helps to rest. So if you were wondering how to get a better night’s sleep (and you hadn’t read the article we devoted to it a while ago), you can try running a little bit every day. After a few days you will notice the difference.
